Yesterday John and I looked at each other over our packing boxes and said "Let's take the afternoon off!" We decided to go to Farmer's Market in Hollywood for lunch. I hadn't been there since I was a little girl. I remember going with my parents and my two aunts and uncles as a big outing. I remember giant strawberries and huge peaches and Humphries Bakery. At Humphries we could watch the baker decorate cakes with champagne bottles in the center surrounded by big pink frosting elephants. I never got tired of watching the baker swirl the frosting bag to make the elephant trunk drape across the top of the cake. So off we went.

John decided to take surface streets (undoubtedly in a fit of packing box avoidance) instead of the freeways. We traveled through old neighborhoods with wonderful Spanish houses and hundred year old shrubs and trees right next to commercial buildings with great murals. We passed through small ethnic sections of town: Mexican, Korean, Chinese, Armenian and their neighborhood eateries. Finally we arrived at Farmers Market which was really crowded, but the aromas of all the little food stalls beckoned us on. Humphries was still there but the elephant cakes looked sad and tacky. The fruit didn't look so huge to my grown up eyes either, but we enjoyed ourselves.

We arrived home refreshed and ready to take on more boxes.
I have been meaning to show you this sign which is about three houses down the hill from our current home. I worried that this sign would scare away potential buyers, but evidently not. I guess I am the only scaredy cat around here.

That sign would sure be a nice souvenir...
