My brothers and I had a wonderful, gentle, kind, funny, loving father. Recently one of my brothers came cross this bit of paper. It is a 1938 permit to carry a gun issued to my dad.
In 1938, dad and mom had been married almost two years. We wonder why he needed a gun. We also wonder why he looks like a gangster in this photo. My dad was a quiet man who was totally attentive to his family. He passed away when I was in my very early 30s and totally attentive to my own family. I wish I knew more about his childhood and life.We didn't ask. He didn't offer. He was an only child who lost his own father very, very young. There is nothing else we know.Maybe this is a lesson to all of us to write our history down because one of our children may want to know their back story.
