We have seen so many more deer this year than ever before. Every ride down JayCox Road affords a sighting of mostly fawns and does. John has seen bucks in the backyard.
Whitetail deer are estimated to be in the 750,000 population range in Ohio. Their only predators are man and coyotes.
Man kills about 200,000 a year here which seems like quite a huge number, but deer can get pregnant at 6 months and with a first pregnancy give birth to one fawn, but subsequent pregnancies are 2-3 fawns. They weigh just 4-7lbs at birth.
We have seen many spotted fawns this year. Fawns only keep their spots for the first 3 months, so we are seeing babies. Deer have a potential to live 11-12 years, but seldom live even 6 years. Whitetail deer need about 300-400 acres of grazing area and they like woods, living at the edge of the woods which is where we see them. The last winter was harsh and there has been a great deal of housing/building in the area pushing the deer into new areas.
